Grilles can be applied to window glass in various patterns and in various ways (inside, outside, in between). Want to know more about this topic? Check out “How to pick out energy-efficient windows." There are also coating upgrades and coating combinations available to further boost performance for a specific climate. There are several types of coatings suitable for various climate types. These coatings are ultra thin and generally transparent. All our windows come standard with a Low-E coating. Low emissivity (Low-E) glass: Glass with a special coating that helps reflect heat and keep your home more comfortable. Note: Windows can also be ordered with air fill and high-altitude capillary breathing tubes, which allow for the release of pressure. Typically, air spaces on our windows are filled with an argon gas blend that’s denser than air and therefore improves insulation. Triple-pane glass is an option on our A-Series and E-Series windows.Īir space: Found in between the panes of glass on a dual- or triple-pane window, this feature helps insulate the home against the elements. Triple-pane glass: Goes one step further than dual-pane and includes an additional pane (or sheet) of glass and an additional air space, making it the most energy-efficient glass type. It’s also required by most building codes. This type of window glass is better at insulating than single-pane glass and is a standard offering on all our windows. You might find this in an older home.ĭual-pane glass: Two panes (or sheets) of glass with an air space in between. Often windows with this type of glass are paired with a storm window because they’re not well insulated. Single-pane glass: One sheet of glass between indoors and outdoors. The first definition of light/lite (see above) can also be used as a synonym for pane. Single-pane windows include one sheet of glass, dual-pane windows include two sheets of glass, etc. Think of it as a synonym for window glass. It’s likely you’ll hear this term most frequently in reference to the first meaning. Glazing: This word can have two meanings: 1) the glass in a window or door, and 2) the act of installing glass in a window or door. Find out more about replacement sash in our Parts Store. Replacement sash: It is sometimes possible to replace a broken sash with a new one. Double-hung sashes move vertically - the top sash moves down, and the bottom sash moves up. For example, gliding sashes move horizontally. Sashes move in different directions depending on the type of window. Moveable sash: This means a sash that can move - sometimes described as “venting” or “operable.” The movement of a sash is what allows a window to open. Want to know more about the difference between single and double-hung windows? Here’s a little more about the different types of window sashes.įixed sash: This simply means a sash that doesn’t move - sometime described as “non-venting” or “non-operable.” Examples are picture windows or the top part of a single-hung window. All other windows have two or more sashes. A casement window has a single sash, as does a picture window. Note, when referring to exterior window trim, we use the term “brick mould.”Īs you now know, a window sash is the glass and framing (stiles and rails) immediately surrounding the glass. It’s not technically a part of a window, but it does complete the look of a window. Trim (or casing): The decorative millwork or molding surrounding a window. Light (or lite): This term can have two meanings 1) A sheet of glass (also called a pane) in a window sash or door panel, and 2) an individual pane within a larger sheet of glass that’s created by grille bars. For more on this, skip down to window glass vocabulary. Grilles: Bars applied to window glass to create a grid or other ornamental pattern. Stool: The horizontal piece jutting out at the bottom of a window frame - a favorite perch for cats everywhere. Jamb: The pieces forming the top and sides of a window frame. For more on this, skip down to the next section. Sash: The glass and the framing (stiles, rails) around the glass. Frame: The outer structure of the window holding the sash in place. Originally done with charcoal, this style is bold and strong, often using a thicker needle and obsidian ink. As you can see in various examples above, the saturation of black makes the unblemished spaces really pop! Black work is also a useful way to cover up a previous tattoo while maintaining the negative space in creat ing a new image. I’m personally a big fan of the crescent moon waxing against the darkened fingers. Negative space is often used as ornamentation or to highlight a particular image against solid black ink. The most common places for a full blackout are the arms, legs, or back. Check out the labyrinthian vibes in the fifth picture! Negative space through geometric designs can also be used to create optical illusions, guaranteeing a double-take wherever you go. Whether done in a minimalist style or through intricate layering reminiscent of Escher, this technique takes advantage of negative space through the most natural and mathematical means. Negative space can also be brought out in the delineations, inking in the filler space inside the geometric figures and using the negative space as the outlines. Negative space can be utilized through sharp linework that focuses space into patterns and optical illusions, like in the first and second examples. Geometric designs really lend themselves to negative space tattooing. Once you get a glimpse of the possibilities that are compiled here, you will have no choice except to head straight towards the nearest tattoo parlor! 1. When done properly, empty space tattoos are too suave for words. To get a full understanding of these debonair tattoos, you simply need to see them with your own eyes. This effect can be pulled off for fascinating variations of complex geometry too.Ĭomprehensive patterns are a common theme with empty space tattoos, and the approach ingeniously allows for concentric circles alongside tribal prints. Basically, the absent areas form a silhouette of any desired image you may have in mind.įor a truly inspiring piece, the male population has started pursuing dual image tattoos by using the empty space to imply another picture within the original aesthetics. These portraits usually rely strictly on black ink, so they are astonishingly affordable when compared to other options. To take an entirely different approach to tattoos, a lot of today’s men are pursuing negative space ink jobs. These richly creative presentations employ optical illusions that allow the human eye to fill in the image. Focusing on the leaf forms is fine for a line drawing, but if you want a shaded value drawing, you'll need to observe the negative spaces as shown, so that you can leave behind the positive space, drawing the leaves lighter, and leaving the white edges and veins of the leaves clear. The entire universe of ink art has been revolutionized by negative space tattoos. In the photograph, note how the red-outlined dark areas lock together to reveal the form of the foreground shapes of the leaves. The 'foreground' - the positive shapes of light hair or grass - are 'left behind' as white paper while the shadows and darks are drawn with dark charcoal or pencil.Ī sound understanding of negative space drawing is critical for watercolor painting, as a watercolor is built through a progressive overlaying of negative-space areas, working from light to dark. It is needed when you have a texture like light-colored hair or grass, when you need to focus on the dark shadows behind and underneath the strands. Negative space is used a great deal when you want to avoid outlining and create true value drawing. Seeing negative spaces correctly is a skill worth developing. The developer’s website lists the software as compatible with Windows 2000 and XP, long before OneDrive ever existed. The first time I loaded Paint Tool SAI, it started automatically downloading unsynced files from my OneDrive, which seemed very odd but was probably unintentional. Normally, this might not be a problem, but GIMP is so complicated that a bit of onboarding help for new users would be a huge improvement. The latest version is quite a bit better than previous releases, but there’s still almost no introductory information available. GIMP shares the unfortunate trait found in too much of the free open-source software out there: a very unpolished user experience. Winner: GIMP, which has a huge range of image creation and editing tools above and beyond the world of digital painting. Paint Tool SAI’s adjustments are limited to Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast. GIMP is intended as a general-purpose image editor, which means that it contains a huge range of tools for manipulating existing images (far too many to list here). Just a few of the additional tools found in GIMP 2.10 Both GIMP and Paint Tool SAI offer support for most of the popular drawing tablets that are currently available, although you’ll have to test yours to make sure that there are no issues. Most digital artists prefer to work with a tablet and stylus, which provides far better control than a standard computer mouse. Paint Tool SAI has near-perfect responsiveness at large sizes, although it doesn’t offer as many brushes by default. GIMP offers a huge range of flexible brushes and options but can lag severely when working on high-resolution images. GIMP also allows you to use multiple layers, but it doesn’t have vector support beyond very basic paths, which I find to be quite frustrating in practical usage. Paint Tool SAI also offers specialized Linework layers that use simple editable vector lines to help sketch/map your painting project. This may not be an issue if you only want to paint for the screen, but if you’re ever planning to print your artwork, you’ll need to work in a high-resolution format. It’s hard to paint when your brush stroke appears 3-4 seconds behind your cursor position, which sort of defeats the purpose of having such fancy brushes.īy comparison, Paint Tool SAI’s brushes only started to lag slightly when I pushed them to their very highest quality and complexity. However, even during my quick testing, the MyPaint brushes in GIMP lagged quite badly when used in a high-resolution image, even on my extremely powerful desktop computer. (MyPaint is also a free, open-source digital painting app in its own right, but that’s a topic for another post.) J ust a few of the presets available in GIMP using the MyPaint brush There are only 14 presets and a few different brush tip shapes to choose from, but this is more than enough to get started.Įach brushstroke interacts with the existing digital paint on your canvas, allowing for very natural blending that mimics the feel of working with physical media. Paint Tool SAI and GIMP don’t exactly overlap, so some of these categories will be a little bit different than usual because I’m guessing you’re most curious about how they compare to digital painting tools.Īt first glance, Paint Tool SAI’s brushes are fairly simple. When comparing software, it’s important to outline the criteria that I’m using in the review. GIMP is a much better all-around image editor that includes some decent painting options, while Paint Tool SAI is an excellent digital painting app with almost no other image editing capabilities at all. First, it decreases stress because you control your own learning versus everything surprises you.” Second, he said, it helps the student retain the words. “What key words do you think you’ll need to use? This is how they create their own dictionary. “There is the notion that we don’t forget things, we just lose the path to memories.”įor instance, Oded explained, say they wanted to do a presentation on economy. Most language classrooms have the students memorize a large vocabulary list every day, something Oded isn’t big on. This means there isn’t such an emphasis on memorizing a list of vocabulary words. And the environment is usually easier to manipulate and will yield better results.”įor example, in the Hebrew classrooms, they rely heavily on presentations rather than tests. In HPT, Oded said, “they say you can change your behavior in one of two ways: you can do more training to try to change the person himself. If you control your own destiny, you are less stressed. One less decision means people that are less engaged, less professional, less committed. “The notion is that every rule means one less decision. He firmly believes in an open architecture method of teaching. Yaniv Oded is chair of the Hewbrew department at DLIFLC. Oded calls that kind of trust social capital. With this kind of curriculum, “we are taking a calculated risk and are trusting the teachers and students,” Sung-Frear said. This method of open architecture in the classroom works very well for the Hebrew department because they come together almost as a family. They are proud of their involvement in learning.” Which is important, she added because “you can’t force enthusiasm.” “They are very energetic and excited about their learning. Hyekyung Sung-Frear, dean of the European and Latin American Language School which includes Hebrew, said that during student sensing sessions that she conducts there is a noticeable difference with the Hebrew students. I can learn stuff that I’m interested in as well.”ĭr. “It makes me a lot more interested in what we’re going to do, knowing I don’t have someone telling me what I need to learn. Hearing that he was part of building the curriculum motivated him. It works for Airman 1st Class Houston Howard, a third semester student at the Hebrew school. They do it together with another team and the students agree to it because they are part of that team, too.” And by everybody, I mean that the teachers cannot be the only decision maker. “We literally produce more initiatives than we can consume. Instead, they use methods he calls initiatives. “If you do a pilot and it succeeds, it means that others need to do it, too.” A pilot has become political, he explained. “The key model there is instead of analyze, design, develop,” Oded said, as it’s done in a more typical curriculum, “it’s more things like rapid prototyping.” This means they don’t have one pilot model of a teaching method. HPT is a systematic approach to improving organizational success. While he earned his master’s degree, the idea to open up the rigid classroom schedule came gradually from a concept called Human Performance Technology, or HPT, a concept that was developed in the 1970s. Mansour Hussein, an instructor with DLIFLC, takes advantage of the sunny morning to teach his Hebrew students outdoors.Įngaged is all that’s needed, he added. Yeah, yeah, we know his face technically belonged to actor James Franco when those things occurred, and not Roger Howarth, but the idea is the same. But no one wants to watch Sam potentially fall in love with the face of a man who strapped her to a bomb, drugged her, let her believe he raped her, kidnapped her son, and lived his life with the sole purpose of torturing her ex-husband Jason. Sam loved Drew, he is her daughter’s father, and there are devoted ‘Dream’ fans who want a reunion, which could happen considering Sam and Jason broke up. If they put Drew’s memories and personality into Franco’s body it would be an insult not only to the characters, but to the audience as well. Whether they were interacting with him, or just discussing him, viewers always felt Jason and Sam’s hatred for their former tormenter. But, General Hospital did the smart thing and kept Jason and Sam hating Franco, even after he won the love of Port Charles’ sweetheart Elizabeth. Soap operas love to redeem their villains and have everyone forget their sins. And if Billy Miller isn’t returning, then a recast will do - just not Roger Howarth. It would even make sense storyline-wise to bring him back right now. There are tons of unresolved storylines we’d like to see the soap address. And now that we know Roger Howarth is returning to the ABC soap, despite his character dying, we started connecting some dots… and we have concerns. Franco even started sensing his former childhood friend’s memories again. There was a lot of Drew talk on General Hospital before Franco was killed last week. CDL will have other gripping General Hospital spoilers, updates and news for you, so make us your hotspot. There might be fan uproar should the GH actor be recast in *this* role. General Hospital spoilers say the “Friz” family will be thrown into turmoil down the road, so stay tuned. We’ll bring you updates as other details emerge. Whatever the case, General Hospital spoilers say Cameron’s world will blow up in the coming weeks. Another might be that Cameron will witness Jason or someone else doing the deadly deed. If Franco turns dark or Cam believes he’s turned dark, could Cameron have to kill his own stepfather? That’s one possibility to consider here. There was an ominous vibe about that promise when Cam made it during a conversation with Trina Robinson (Sydney Mikayla). GH fans know Cameron has vowed to do whatever it takes to protect his family. Death is swirling all around Franco – and he certainly fits the bill when it comes to a character that some viewers love and others hate. Now Peter August (Wes Ramsey) seems to be a deadly threat, too. Whatever the case, GH insiders suggest a polarizing character will be killed off – and it’ll somehow connect to the recent news of Alexander “Zander” Smith’s (Chad Brannon) return.įranco is dying of cancer and has made a deadly pact with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton). Let’s talk about what we know so far and try to prepare for a difficult death in Port Charles.įor starters, we have to acknowledge that General Hospital writers chose to bring back Franco Baldwin’s (Roger Howarth) brain tumor – the very thing that could turn him back into “Bad Franco.” Although Franco isn’t dangerous yet, there’s still time for this storyline to take a perilous turn.Įven if Peter August (Wes Ramsey) just manipulates the situation to make it seem that way, there’s the potential for trouble. Based on what we’re hearing from GH insiders, another character is gearing up for a grim fate. Of course, Julian Jerome (William deVry) wound up in a body bag once all his criminal behavior finally caught up with him. GH fans know that several major players have departed the show in recent months.ĭustin Phillips (Mark Lawson) and Dev Cerci aka “Dev Corbin” (Ashton Arbab) were killed off in The Floating Rib explosion, which also sent comatose Lulu Spencer (Emme Rylan) off canvas. There are in the region of 520 rock shelters in the park, which are adorned with 30 000 images painted about 4 000 years ago by the San using various pigments, such as plant sap, animal blood, and natural ochre. Western Cape: Cederberg, Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Areaīushman’s Kloof is in custody of an incredible piece of heritage over 130 different rock art sites have been identified here, some of which have been dated to as far back as 10 000 years. These are some of the best places to view rock art in South Africa Rock art and a view in the Drakensberg Mountains. These discoveries in Blombos Cave are known to be some of the oldest prehistoric art in the world, dating back well over 70 000 years! South Africa has a large amount of paintings and engravings, some of which date back thousands of years, but most significant are the etchings in ochre that were discovered in a limestone cave on the southern Cape coast. In this article, we’re highlighting three rock art sites that are more or less on the popular tourist route, making them easy to access if you’re hitting the safari destinations of the Kruger National Park and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, or heading up on a cross-border road trip to Botswana or Zimbabwe. There are places scattered across the country that are renowned for either paintings or engravings left by the San (Bushman) or the Khoekhoen (Herders), and if you’re travelling in more remote parts of South Africa and have a cultural interest in the country, it would be worth your while to check out the details for some of these sites. The best places to view rock art in South Africa are in the Drakensberg mountains on the border of KwaZulu Natal and Lesotho, in the Cape Cederberg area, and in the Karoo. So we remove a square of side length P 2 16 - A to make a (symmetric) L–shape. This square has area P 2 16, which is P 2 16 - A too much. To get a square with perimeter P we need side length P 4. We can run this algorithm from an arbitrary starting point, i.e., perimeter P and area A. The obvious thing to do is to draw the squares. We want to put those together in a way that makes the story clear. Geometrically, this again means finding a square but this time with area P 2 16 - A.Ī square with the same perimeter as the original rectangle,Ī second square whose area is the difference between the new square and the original rectangle. If we then tried to solve for w, we would square root P 2 16 - A. Looking at Equation ( 1), the quantity P 2 16 is then the area of that square and P 2 16 - A is the difference between the area of the square and the original rectangle. So P 4 is the side length of a square with the same perimeter as our original rectangle. If it were the perimeter of a square then P 4 would be the side length. This is quite straightforward to come up with since the quantity P is the perimeter of a rectangle. So to find a route to Equation ( 1), we need to find a justification for the quantity P 4. Key to Equation ( 1) is the quantity P 4. The goal is to find a way to effectively get that formula without doing the algebra or mentioning the phrase "quadratic equation". So if we know A and P, we can get an equation for w by eliminating h: The equations linking area, A, perimeter, P, height, h, and width, w, are: The quadratic equation for the width is simple to set up. The level at which I was aiming this activity meant that I didn't want to make that explicit, but wondered if I could figure out how to make solving it a natural progression. Obviously, starting with the width and height then one can easily calculate the perimeter and width, but going the other way involves solving a quadratic. My aim was to create an activity with the various formulae relating the width and height of a rectangle to its perimeter and area. I was playing around with formulae involving rectangles and figured out a different take on the geometry of completing the square. |
